Ephesians

The Apostle emphasizes the mystery received in the Church, such as 1:9, 3:3, 3:4, 3:6, 3:9, 5:32, and 6:19. Paul likely wrote this while in his imprisonment at the place called Mamertine Prison - which is located beneath the Church of San Giuseppe dei Falegnami - in the Roman Forum and you can read more of the context of his Prison Epistles according to Acts 28:16-31. His intended audience is either a specific diocese seated in Ephesus (western Turkey) or a general family of dioceses that included various seats (thrones) in western Asia Minor and Laodicea (ref. Colossians 4:16) which would mean the churches founded by Peter and John would also be the intended audience. This epistle lacks a specific audience, whereas the other Pauline epistles often address specific individuals in house churches, synagogues, temples, public offices, or religious places. Today the Church uses at least 7 mysteries: confession (reconciliation/penance), baptism, chrismation (confirmation); marriage (matrimony), ordination (holy orders), communion (eucharist), and holy unction (olive oil), plus the other apostolic traditions such as obedience, healing, exorcism, fasting, piety, almsgiving, blessing (of the waters), hesychasm, and virtue building, to name a few. And this Epistle to the Ephesians is one of many examples of the Church having record of the Mysteries declared and described for liturgical use.
