2 Paralipomena

The book of 2 Chronicles is a theological history focusing on the kings of the Southern Kingdom of Judah, from the reign of Solomon to the Babylonian exile. It emphasizes the importance of religious fidelity and correct temple worship, portraying the reigns of kings based on their spiritual devotion to God. The book serves to offer hope and guidance to the post-exilic community, showing how a return to God leads to blessing and a reminder of God's covenant promises. From one tradition, the two books are really one work, and are treated as one in the Hebrew manuscripts and in the Massoretic summary appended to the second book. The division was first made in the Septuagint for the sake of convenience, and thence was adopted into the Latin Bibles. The Hebrew text was first divided in Daniel Bomberg's edition of the rabbinical Bible (Venice, 1516-1517 AD). Moreover, there is a probability that Paralipomenon originally formed part of a larger work which included the two Books of Esdras due to similarity of diction and style, of spirit and method. But I Esdras begins where II Paralipomenon ends
