Ariston of Smyrna

Ariston is commemorated on September 3rd and was quoted by Papias of Hierapolis, and perhaps wrote the longer ending of Mark's gospel; and Ariston is also quoted by Eusubius of Caesarea, although the latter might refer to Ariston of Pella. According to Eastern Orthodoxy, Ariston of Smyrna is considered an early Christian bishop who was an eyewitness to Jesus and a companion of John the Elder. He is mentioned by the church father Papias of Hierapolis as a source of information about the sayings of the Lord. Some traditions, though not universally established, also describe him as an early bishop of Smyrna and a martyr who was burned to death for his faith. Another tradition cites him as bishop of Isso or lesser Alexandria in Cilicia (Asia Minor).

Key aspects of his importance:

  • Eyewitness and disciple: Ariston was believed to have been a disciple of Jesus and an eyewitness to his life and teachings.

  • Source for early church leaders: Papias of Hierapolis reported inquiring of Ariston and John the Elder about the sayings of Jesus.

  • Martyrdom: According to OrthodoxWiki, Ariston was martyred by being thrown into a furnace, and his relics were collected by his followers.

  • Bishop of Smyrna: While there is some debate, he is often considered the first or an early bishop of the Church of Smyrna, which is mentioned in the Book of Revelation.

  • Distinction from other figures: It's important to distinguish him from other individuals named Aristo, such as Aristo of Pella.
