Hesychast Controversy

The conflict pitted the mystical monastic tradition, defended by St. Gregory Palamas, against rationalistic Byzantine intellectuals like Barlaam of Calabria. The controversy concluded with the official endorsement of Palamas's teachings, affirming the distinction between God's essence and his uncreated energies as a basis for union with God through prayer. Below is an example prayer of someone who has practiced or understood the essence-energy distinction. It is a common morning prayer, but it features the Trinity and the worship of God with a series of hymns. Monks continue to replicate and inform the world with Christian asceticism and disciplined prayer life. This prayer is an example of a prayer rule which is assigned for humility and with grace. https://youtu.be/Y2_z9x6J6fo?si=uN413_-4KMwA7mLq
